Greenhead Sprints Indoor Rowing Regatta March 3

 

Rowers of all ages are invited to tune up for the spring racing season by competing in the annual Greenhead Sprints Indoor Rowing Regatta.

The event takes place from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, March 3 at the laceName>NorthlaceName> laceType>SchoollaceType>, East Evans Boulevard and Lafayette Place.

Participants compete by rowing 2,000 meters on new Concept II ergometers.

Up to 24 rowers can compete in each race and spectators watch the action on a wide-screen video monitor.

The Greenhead Sprints is sponsored by the Brigantine Rowing Club and features three levels of competition.

 

High School Championship

High School crew coaches are invited to put together an eight-member crew with two varsity, two junior varsity, two lightweight and two freshmen rowers.

These championship eights will compete from noon to 1:30 p.m. The boat speed of each eight is determined by averaging the times of its rowers. The fastest boys and girls crew win trophies.

All rowers in the two winning boats will receive medals.

Also, medals will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place boys and girls in the following categories: varsity, junior varsity, lightweight and freshmen.

Competitors in the high school championship are not eligible for medals in other high school events.

High school team races

High school coaches may reserve race times and assign competitors to each race. Race times are available from 6:30 a.m. to noon and after 2 p.m.

First-, second- and third-place medals will be awarded to high school boys and girls in these categories: freshmen; lightweight (boys less than 150 pounds, girls less than 130 130 lbs.); junior varsity (freshman, sophomores and juniors); varsity.

Individual races

Youth, college, open and masters rowers, as well as high school rowers entering on their own, can also compete in the Greenhead Sprints. Individual races are scheduled at 8 a.m., 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

The following categories are open to males and females: youth (grades seven and eight), lightweight and heavyweight; college, lightweight and heavyweight; open (ages 19-29) lightweight and heavyweight; masters (30-39), lightweight and heavyweight; senior (40-49), lightweight and heavyweight; veteran “A” (50-59), lightweight and heavyweight; veteran “B” (60-69), lightweight and heavyweight; veteran “C”(age 70-over), lightweight and heavyweight.

Competitors should register by Wednesday, Feb. 28 at www.brigantinerowingclub.org.  The entry fee is $15 for online registration by Feb 28 and $20 after.

Competitors are due at the regatta one hour before their race. All entrants receive a t-shirt.
