Holy Spirit crushes Holy Cross

There’s no place like home, especially for the Holy Spirit High School varsity girls basketball team.

The Lady Spartans won their 10th consecutive home contest in defeating Holy Cross 57-24 Thursday, March 1 in a New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Non-public Group A first-round playoff game.

The Lady Spartans, 22-7 overall and 10-0 at home, jumped out to a 19-10 lead after one quarter and held a 31-14 advantage at halftime.

Holy Spirit continued to pull away during the third and fourth quarters, outscoring Holy Cross 26-10 after halftime.

Division I-bound Chelsi Johnson led the Lady Spartans with 18 points and 10 rebounds and was followed by 4-foot-11 guard Nikki Kuhar, who added eight points.

Holy Spirit, the No. 3 seed travels to play at No. 2 seed Red Bank on Saturday, March 3.

Holy Spirit is the only girls team of out the 20-school Cape-Atlantic League to remain undefeated at home this season.

On the boys side, Atlantic City is perfect at 14-0 at home.
